Scottish Election Result: The Loss of Labour

Kezia Dugdale has promised to continue as Scottish Labour leader, despite a “heartbreaking” result for the party, in the general election.

The former Edinburgh Eastern MSP was beaten out to the seat by Ash Denham of the SNP, before slipping into the role of a regional list MSP.

Labour finished third with just 24 seats – down 13 from 2011 – its the worst result they have had since devolution.

Anas Sarwar, who was among four Labour list MPs who won seats in the election, doesn’t believe Dugdale should stand down as leader of Scottish Labour.

The Scottish Conservatives won 31 seats to make them the second-largest party behind the SNP on 63, taking over them in many of Glasgow’s constituencies, that were previously dominant Labour voters.

Residents in the Glasgow area had mixed reactions to the news that Labour had been effectively replaced with the Conservatives in their constituencies.
